Make Your Home Safer This National Baby Safety Month

Prevent Injuries at Home With These Baby Safety Tips

It is normal for babies to wander and explore their environment. This exploration gives them an opportunity to learn how the world works. While it can be exciting for kids to gain confidence in your home, The Insurance Center would like to highlight a few safety hazards in observance of National Baby Safety Month.

“Toddlers see the world in an entirely different way, and they don’t recognize apparent dangers at this point in their development. Although, parents should expect that their toddlers will have small tumbles, certain risks should be addressed to prevent serious injuries at home,” said Robert J. Sammon, President of The Insurance Center.

Here are a few precautions to keep in mind that could help make your home safer.

Secure Furniture That Could Tip Over

Toddlers will sometimes climb dressers by using drawers as steps, which could tip over furniture. To help avoid an injury when you are not present, secure large furniture to walls using brackets and screws.

Remove Tripping Hazards

Small toys, misplaced shoes, and cords could present a real danger to anyone in your home. If your home features a staircase, it is important to take extra steps to remove these hazards.

Make the Staircase Safer

If you have a staircase in your home, consider making it inaccessible to children with a gate. Also, consider installing handrails if they are missing from your staircase.

Safely Mount TVs to Your Wall

Modern TVs are thin and are supported with stand legs. While these are generally safe to use, toddlers could unbalance them by pushing on the display. Today, you can find universal wall mounts that are easy to install at any big-box retailer.

Lock Your Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen is full of sharp utensils. Toddlers will use their ingenuity to reach most of the cabinets in your kitchen, which is why it is important to secure doors with specially designed locks.

Every year, thousands of children and adults are admitted to the hospital for injuries sustained at home. With these precautions in mind, The Insurance Center is confident that you can reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring.
