Prioritize these Summer Safety Tips to Prevent Home Fires

Summertime activities could distract even the most discerning homeowners from threats this season. With a commitment to help families mitigate losses year round, The Insurance Center would like to bring your attention to a few common causes of home fires.

“During the summer months, many families are preoccupied planning their weekend excursions,” said Robert J. Sammon, President of The Insurance Center. “It is possible to remain focused on preventative measures while still enjoying the season’s offerings.”

To help prevent fire-related accidents at home, we’d like to share these fire safety tips to help you avoid any mishaps.

Keep the Grill Grounded

Grills contribute to thousands of home fires every year, and for very different reasons. We urge homeowners to be mindful of keeping grills on level surfaces, placing it at least 10 feet from your home, and a safe distance away from low hanging branches.

Plug-In ACs to Wall Outlets

Air conditioners can be life savers during intense summer days. Window units are especially prone to causing a fire because they draw so much electricity. Make sure your AC is plugged into a wall outlet, and discontinue its use if you find loose or faulty wires.

Clean Drying Machines Regularly

Many households have a laundry at home out of convenience, but this luxury can also cause a fire. Homeowners are encouraged to clear lint traps after every use and to make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is clear of any debris.

As you may have noticed from this list, appliances that are used in the summer could cost you more than you would expect. Fires can happen at any time of the year, and it is important for homeowners to be mindful of these hazards to help prevent an accident.
